THE VILLA

A terrace above the sea.

Villa Monte Bianco stands on the main hill of Castiglione della Pescaia, the old fishing town perched above the Maremma coast. It is a quiet residential street among other villas, yet the medieval centre is only 600 m away and the beach about a kilometre down the hill. Built in the 1990s as a family home, it still feels like one – with shell collections, design pieces and framed sailing knots chosen to match the sea outside.

The heart of the house is the terrace, which runs the whole length of the villa: lie in the sun, light candles for dinner, or open a bottle of Maremma wine as the sun sets over the bay. Around it there is an outdoor kitchen, a dining area in the shade of a pergola, an outdoor shower for after the beach, and a Mediterranean garden full of bougainvillea, lemon trees and flowering shrubs.

Inside, the bright living room and open kitchen look out to the garden and the sea, and four bedrooms sleep six guests, with two bathrooms – one with a shower, one with a bathtub – and a separate WC. Air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a washing machine, free parking and a garage make longer stays easy. And because the coast is the point, we can arrange the rest: a beach club, boat trips to Elba and Giglio, wine tours, bikes, horse riding or a private chef on the terrace.
